Abstract

Porous ceramic product is prepared by firing and subsequently cooling, dry clay particles mixed with an additive such as talc which ensures development during firing of supplementary crystalline phases. Used for mfr. of wall partitions. The mechanical properties of the product are improved compared with prior art products without the supplementary phases. The length of the cooling cycle can be shortened without alteration of the product. The additive may be added in amount 2-10 (2-5) wt.%. The preferred additives are tacl alone or mixed with seed crystals of cordierite esp. Artal (RTM). Other suitable additives include magnesian clay esp. of the chlorite type, and several other alkaline earth metal carbonates (3-7%) such as dolomite, CaCO3. The total amount of additives should not exceed 20% (2-15%) of the wt. of the dry clay.
