Abstract

Solid diffusion system with a hard polymer matrix for releasing vapours of a volatile agent to improve the smell of the surrounding air, are made by radical polymerisation of (1) 5-95 wt. % of a monomeric material comprising (A) >=1 monomer with >=2 terminal gps. Y-CH=C(Y) right arrow X - per mol where Y = -(CH2)m-1-H or -(CH2)n-1-CO-O-R where m and n = 1 or 2; X = a bridge member right arrow CH2-, right arrow NR-, right arrow CO-(O)p-1- where p = 1 or 2, (I) or right arrow O-, where the bond right arrow is joined to a C or N atom, and R=H or an org. gp. free from steric hinderance to polymerisation, which monomer polymerised and cross links rapidly by radical polymerisation to give a hydrophobic polymer; or (B) a mixt. of a monomer (A) with a mono unsatd. copolymerisable monomer which polymerises to form a yield a hydrophobic polymer, in a ratio 7-93:93-7; or (C) >=1 monomer (A) and a copolymerisable monomer which gives a hydrophilic polymer, in a mol. ratio of 50:50 to 95:5, in the presence of (2) 95-5 wt. % of a non-aqueous, volatile air-freshening agent which does not copolymerise with the monomers during formation of the resin matrix, to give a syneresis-free, heat- and frost-resistant, insol. and essentially hydrophobic polymer network structure containing entrained perfume agent. Advantage allows incorporation of larger amts. of perfume material than prior art systems and gives prods. in which the rate of release of perfume agent can be controlled. Prods. can be made in the form of rods, blocks, gels, foams and (esp.) as pearls with a dimater of 0.01-3 mm, which can e.g. by bonded to various surfaces with an adhesive.
