Abstract

Fabrication of a massive monolithic piece of ceramic material comprising >=1 internal cavity or a network of cavities of complex shapes and precise positions comprises arranging cores having the shapes of the cavities required in desired position in a mould having the general outline of the desired shape and moulding the ceramic around the cores, removing the mass from the mould and firing. The cores may be hollow or solid, and are pref. made of a material which can be subsequently removed e.g. by fusion dissolution, chemical attack etc. The ceramic may be SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 or zircon, the cores maybe made of paraffins, waxes, organic materials or metal. Esp useful for making complex networks of channels opening into one another.
