Abstract

Carbon black is produced from a mixt. contg. >=2 basic hydrocarbon materials; one of them having a coking value 45% (pref. =40%) is pref. a coal tar distillate or tar obtd. from steam-cracked naphtha; another having a coking value >45% (pref. >=50%) is pref. a catalytically cracked tar or tar obtd. from steam-cracked heavy gas oil. The proportion of these two basic materials is such that the total content of asphaltenes having high coking number is not higher than 8 wt.% if the maximal coking value of the asphaltene-contg components >=60% the total asphaltene content is not >10 wt.% if the maximal coking value is 55-60%, and the total asphaltene content is not >12 wt.% if the maximal coking value is 50-55%. A diluent can be added to adjust the viscosity of the fluid mixt. to max 15 cS at 99 degrees C; the diluent is pref. an aromatic petroleum distillate boiling at 200-500 degrees C. This mixt. is pyrolysed at an elevated temp. in an atmos. deficient in oxygen to produce carbon black. Tendency to coking is suppressed so that materials of inferior quality can be utilised in the prodn. of carbon black.
