Abstract

Device for welding immersed tubular parts, esp. pipes and flanges, using a jig to hold the end of one part (1) in a hole machined in the other part (2), the jig also holding an explosive cartridge in the end of part (1). The novelty is that the hole is a truncated cone, the major dia. being near the end of the male part (1) in the hole, whereas the minor dia. is larger than the dia. of part (1). The cartridge contains means to start the explosion near to the minor dia. of the truncated cone, while the jig centres the two parts and seals them from the medium in which they are immersed. Means are provided to circulate gas in the space between the parts. It is used for example, in welding steel flanges onto steel pipes used to carry oil under water. Provides rapid and efficient explosion welding at low cost.
