Abstract

A vertical axis silo, particularly for sugar, is cylindrical with openings for top loading. Inside is a vertical shaft (17) rotated through the bottom discharge outlet by a motor and reuction gearbox. A sealed chute below the outlet directs the sugar onto a conveyor. The vertical shaft carries two scraper arms (22, 23) which can rotate with it and spread the sugar. The arms are mounted on a sleeve surrounding the shaft and suspended from cables attached to winches mounted on a platform at the top of the shaft. The winches are driven in unison and adjuste the level of the sleeve on the shaft in accordance with the sugar level.
