Abstract

The liquid crystal layer is placed between two transparent plates with electrodes forming a number of crosspoints, so that the display unit can be controlled like a matrix by consecutive application of voltages to the electrodes. In order to excite the liquid crystal, a counter-voltage is applied to the areas to be excited. In order to stop the excitation, zero voltage is applied to the required areas. One glass plate (2) carries three transparent band shaped electrodes (4, 5, 6) which form columns or X electrodes. The other glass plate has similar electrodes (7, 8, 9) which form lines or Y electrodes.
