Abstract
Water soluble (organic) substances possessing simple bonds, or multiple bonds which are protectable, are isotopically labelled with deuterium or tritium by being irradiated in the absence of oxygen in deuterated or tritiated soln. contg. a water soluble mercaptan and then the labelled substance is separated. The process allows organic substances to be labelled which could not be labelled by prior art methods. The H of the thiol is replaced by deuterium. The iradiation creates radical sites on the substance to be labelled. The protons of these sites combine wih OH in the water and the S-D bonds are homolytically broken. The deuterium atoms are transferred to the radical sites.
