Abstract

The upper portion (1) of the knee joint implant is stainless steel and comprises two lobes (3, 4) curving upwards from a common section, divided by a slot (5). The lobes fit the lower femoral condyles after removal of cartlage. A spike (6) forms the attachment into the medullary canal. The lower portion (2) is also of stainless steel, similarly fixed to the tibia by a spike (8) its top surface (7) supporting a pad (9) of plastic, shaped to form a bearing for the femoral lobes. A pin (10) is fitted to guide and limit knee movement. The spikes are treated to provide a biological compatibility with the bone cells.
