Abstract

The escalator has a number of steps, driven by means of rotary drums (1, 2) at the ends. Each step is fixed to a flexible chain or rope (5) supported on the drums, whose axes (3, 4) are perpendicular to the plane in which the escalator works. The two faces (7, 8) of each step are chamfered off at the inner ends, where they are nearest to the drum axes. The escalator can slope at 45 deg. and the chamfered edges of successive steps can be joined to each other by a distorting membrane. In addition, there can be a conventional type of escalator, running over drums with axes parallel to the plane of the escalator and with its steps adjacent and parallel to those of the main escalator which works in synchronism.
