Abstract

Surface measuring machine, notable for sheet prodts. with regular or irregular edges, is partic. intended for skins and leather. It comprises a frame with a feed table; the matl. to be measured rests on the latter and is drawn through the machine by a conveyor belt, made from a number of nylon threads. A series of discs is carried on cross girders; each one turns freely on the hub, and is fitted with a number of rods which slide freely and radially in openings in the discs. A lower transverse support is provided by cylinders having a covering of rubber. The cylinders are driven and bear on the smaller rollers which support the matl. being measured. The rods project from their openings by gravity when there is no matl. between the rollers and the discs; if they meet a skin the rod is pushed back and cuts off a luminous ray emitted by the transmitter-receiver and produces a signal. The signals operate a memory counting system which records the surface areas. Greater precision and reliability are obtd. than hitherto as the turning and detection means are rigidly mounted to avoid any pivoting or other movement. The memory counting system assures that a complete count is made of all the signals from the different discs.
