Abstract

In a total pulpectomy the dentist seeks to remove all the pulp from the root of a tooth while not breaking through the surface. The clearest guide to the end point-the patient's pain reaction - is not available under anaesthesia, and a depth gauge on the instrument is used instead. The invention covers several designs, all based on the general principle of a clip placed round the head of the instrument, with a cap (56) on top and a collar (52) underneath. It is depth of the collar that determines the depth to which the instrument can work. The depth can be selected either by choosing one from a range of several clips, or, in other designs, by making the collar in two parts, one screwing into the other.
