Abstract

An oil-bearing formation packer for oil wells consists of an upper part with a lower part which can be hydraulically actuated to rupture shear pins and apply annular wedges against the casing on either side of a rubber packing. To disengage the packer, an uncoupling part is turned and the application of a pulling force ruptures two other shear pins to allow slide-back protection sleeves to slide. The oil production tubing needs no manipulation to set the packer. The packer release device is protected against corrosion and clogging and remains functionally reliable for a release after it has remained set for several years.
