Abstract

An appts. for delivering a liq. at a controlled rate, which may vary 1000 fold, eg. in automatic titrations, uses a piston which moves in a calibrated tube under the action of a direct current motor controlled electronically. The speed of rotation is controlled rigorously by a known method and means are provided to indicate the displacement of the piston as impulses. The motor shaft carries a disc with peripheral holes arranged to cut a light beam of an electronic counter. The number of impulses counted is related to the capacity of the tube and used in a computer to control the motor. The same motor can be used for rapid movements, e.g. filling or emptying the tube and for very slow movements e.g. delivering liquids during titrations. The appts. incorporates limit control, automatic starting, zeroing, and control of recorders, printers, etc. The burette can be dismantled rapidly for maintenance or changing. An electromagnetic clutch is fitted eliminating risk of damage by blockages. The appts. allows better control over a wide range of operating conditions than existing appts. and is more readily dismantled for maintenance or changing from one reactant to another or from one tube to another.
