Abstract

A solute is transferred from one fluid to another, through a membrane separating the fluids and permeable to the solute, using a membrane made of an elastic material so that it is deformable or which is connected to a fixed support by a means which is deformable. At least one of the fluids in a liq. The deformability is such that it is possible to impart to the membrane a periodic movement of frequency N and displacements of amplitude A, the product NA being equal to >=5 mm/S. At least 50% of the surface is capable of being displaced. Process is used for extn. of gases dissolved in liqs., O2/CO2 exchange in extra-corporal blood oxygenators, regeneration of the atmosphere in submerged enclosures. The process is more efficient than existing ones because the boundary layer is modified so that the resistance which it offers to diffusion is less.
