Abstract

A vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/ethylene terpolymer (I), with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.4-0.9, pref. 0.5-0.75, contg. 80-93, pref. 84-90 (wt. %) CH2:CHCl, 2-15, pref. 9-15% CH2:CHOAc and 0.5-5, pref. 0.8-2% C2H4, is produced by (a) continuous, one-stage polymerisation of liquid CH2: CHCl and CH2:CHOAc and gaseous C2H4 in an aq. suspension contg. 65-95, pref. 80-90 pts. CH2:CHCl, 35-5, pref. 20-10 pts. CH2:CHOAc (total amt. 100 pts.) 0.05-1.0, pref. 0.1-0.5 pt. protective colloid, 0.005-1.0, pref. 0.5-0.5 pt. free radical initiator, 150-400, pref. 175-250 pts. water and sufficient C2H4 to an autogenous pressure of 7-28, pref. 7-17.5 at g. at 40-90, pref. 60-80 degrees C for at least 3 h; and (b) recovering (I) from the system. Prod. is used in place of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers for the prodn. of mouldings, esp. floor tiles. (I) have a low melt viscosity and require lower processing temps. than the conventional copolymers. They are generally obtd. in the form of free-running particles, the shape, porosity, transparency and other physical properties depending largely on the protective colloid used.
