Abstract
Furfuryl alcohol is prepd. by catalytically hydrogenating furfurol in the liquid phase with hydrogen, or a hydrogen-contg. gas, at 100-160 degrees C, using a reactor contg. stationary catalyst, and a feedstock consisting of furfural diluted with reaction prods. After reduction the catalyst contains (I) 30-70 wt. % metallic copper, (II) at least 25 wt. % oxides of groups I-III metals, and (III) less than 5 wt. % promoters, e.g. sodium oxide, and neutral substances, e.g. graphite. High prod. yields, low by-prod. formation. Relatively low reaction temps. and pressures. Elimination of catalyst filtration from the reaction prod. The catalyst has a long operating life. Hydrogenation is pref. effected under a pressure of 1-15 atmos.
