Abstract
A chamber for quenching freshly extruded filaments with forced flow gas streams applied in two complementary flow patterns. One stream of chilled gas is made to impinge in a convergant annular stream on filaments within 5 cm of their leaving the die head. The flow rate of this gas should be 0.1-1 m/s. A second stream of chilled gas is made to converge radially from jets in a cylindrical array around the filament path. The first stream is required to chill the filaments in that zone 'A' to >30 degrees, and 150 degrees C below their melting temperature. The filaments then pass through a zone 'B' pref. 1-5 cm deep which is not force cooled before entering the region 'C' of the secondary cooling jet. Esp. for production of polyester filaments using filament heads producing 500-3000 strands simultaneously and operating at >600 g/mn from each orifice. The chamber provides sufficiently prompt chilling to prevent cohesion between adjacent strands, and sufficiently uniform chilling to produce filaments of similar orientation and diameter when made in relatively large numbers and rapid throughputs.
