Abstract

Partly crystalline, high mol. wt. ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymers are prepd. by polymsg. 75-92 wt. % ethylene and 8-25 wt. % alpha-olefin in an inert org. solvent at 40-80, esp. 50-60 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (I) a vanadium cpd. that is sol. in the solvent, (II) ethylaluminium sesquichloride, and (III) a perchlorocrotonic acid deriv. of formula: Cl3C. CCl=CCl. COX (where X is Cl, Br or OR; and R is (halogenated) alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, the last three gps. being opt. substd. with aliphatic gps.). The concn. of (I) is 0.001-0.1, esp. 0.002-0.05m mole per 1 l. solvent, and the molar ratio (I)/(II) is 1/130-750, esp. 1/250-500, and of (I)/(II) is 1/25-250, esp. 1/50-200. Prod. has good props. in the unvulcanised state, e.g. good tensile strength, elongation and elasticity. Process gives sheets with a good resistance to extreme atmospheric conditions, and to temps. up to 80 degrees C.
