Abstract

A process is claimed for welding a closure piece on to the end of a tubular thermoplastic body by providing the end of the body profile (1) with an internal step (2) crowned with longitudinal extrusion of the body wall, the closure (4) being sized to fit within the extended body and butt against the internal step. The joint is located by a pointed tongue-and-groove (6-3) engagement between the two faces (4/2), and the joint is welded by use of preheating, spin welding, etc. The closure has an external skirt which fits within the extended body; subsequently the concentric parts are mutually deformed to longitudinally undulating profiles (7/8) which trap the closure in position in the end of the body.
