Abstract

Process for distillation of products (I) which sublime and/or congeal comprises effecting the condensation of (I) in direct heat exchange with a material (II) which does not congeal, is chemically inert towards (I) under the distillation conditions and has a lower b. pt. than (I) or forms an azeotrope of lower b. pt. with (I), and withdrawing (I) below the condensation zone. Pref. (II) is miscible with (I) and is selected from (halogenated)aromatic hydrocarbons, glycols and paraffins, esp. iso-paraffins. Method prevents blockage of condenser tubing and vacuum lines. It is suitable e.g. for distillation of crude napththalene, using cumene as (II).
