Abstract
The fuel element position detector is used inside a reactor vessel enclosing a nuclear reactor and consists of a sonar head which may be raised and lowered vertically and which may be rotated on its axis. The beam produced by the head is very narrow so that it may lit only one fuel element at a time. Return echo signals are received from the front surface of the fuel element, from the rear surface of the fuel element and from the inner wall of the vessel. Return times from the wall of the vessel for each angle of the head are stored, to give confirmation of the angle of the head. The height of the element is determined by raising the sonar head until the echo from the element fades out as the beam passes over it.
