Abstract

Method of fabricating a piece of steel of any compsn. in which a steel blank is heated to an appropriate temp. and formed at that temp. by pressure or a series of shocks, then rapidly cooled in a cooling bath appropriately to the function of the material and the properties desired in the product, and a final heat treatment at low temp. Specif. the hot working temp. is between the AC1 and the AC3 points of the alloy. Used with high and medium carcon, (>0.1%C) or alloy steels for mfr. of wheels and pinions, roller needles, ball needles, wearing rings and other abrasion resistant products. A remarkable combination of contradictory properties can be obtd., according to the nature of the alloy, i.e. resilience, hardness, tensile strength and wear resistance, the latter often being doubled compared with normal treatment.
