Abstract

Heat stable polymers are made by reacting together at >=100 degrees C (a) a meleimide of formula in which A = n-valent organic radical with =50 C, Y = H, CH3 or Cl and n >=1.5, (b) a cpd. (II) contg. >=1 -NH2 grp and (c) a cpd (III) contg. >=1 -CO-R grp., such that the reaction between (II) and (III) gives an imine with an average formula B-N(=CR-G)m where m >=1, B = H or organic radical with =50 C, and G = monovalent organic radical (G1) contg. 35 C or a radical -G'-CR=N-B1, where G' = radical with 35 C and B1 = organic radical as for B, or, if m = 2, a radical of formula -G'-CR=N-B2-(N=CR-G'-CR=N-B2)wE in which B2 = a radical as for B, and the two symbols E represent the ends of the chain and may both have the formula -N=CR-G'-CRO or one may be a radical -N=CT-G'-CRO and the other a -NH2 group, R = H or organic radical with =35 C and the symbols G1 and R together may represent a divalent radical; w = 1 -10 and the amount of reactants used is such that >=one group CO-R and >1 is not >6 double bonds of the maleimide (I) are present per NH2 group of the amine (II). The products are useful eg in the production of heat stable materials with high mechanical strength, and chemical stability at elevated temperatures (eg 200-300 degrees C) and can be ued eg for laminates, printed circuits, electrical insulation, tubes, self lubricating bearings, etc.
