Abstract

Plastics coating with abrasion-resistant polymeric surface coatings are mfd. by (A) coating the entire inner surface of the mould with a liquid monomer contg. at least 2 (meth)acryloxy gps., of mixt. contg. at least 30% such monomers with up to 70% copolymerisable monomers, which may be partially polymerised, (B) closely covering the coating with a cover material and polymerising to a gel content of 40-95%, (C) removing the cover material and further polymerising to a gel content increased by 0.5-60% to at least 90%, (D) filling the mould with a monomer mixt. contg. initiator and polymerising, and (E) removing the casting with surface coating from the mould. Time required for polymerising the coating on the mould to the stage at which the cover material is removed is reduced, making the process more suitable for continuous operation. The cover material separates easily from the mould coating, and the latter adheres strongly to the casting.
