Abstract

Novel process for stabilisation of 2C chlorohydrocarbons contg. at least 3 Cl atoms by the addn. of an acetal of formula (I): R1-O-CH2-O-R1 (I) (where R1 is an alkyl radical of at least 2C atoms). Process is partic. useful for stabilisation of methylchloroform. Pref. 3-5 wt.% of an acetal having R1=2-4C alkyl gps. is used e.g. ethyl, propyl or butyl acetals. Trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene may also be treated. A co-stabiliser such as tert-butanol, amyl alcohol, epichlorohydrin, butylene oxide, nitromethane, dioxane or acetonitrile is also pref. added. The stabilised solvents are useful for degreasing metals, dry-cleaning textiles, and as aerosol ingredients. The stabiliser has a similar b.pt. to the solvent and therefore provides stabilisation over a wide temp. range in the liq. and vapour phases.
