Abstract

The aerofoil type parachute has an upper surface and a lower surface connected by walls forming cells which are open at the leading edge, and closed at the trailing edge. During a gliding descent, air is trapped in the cells under pressure to form a stationary air zone acting as a solid leading edge deflecting the air stream over the upper and over the lower surfaces of the canopy, as in an aeroplate wing. In addition to the usual suspension cords (9) control lines (11) are attached to the outside of the trailing edge, ending in handgrips within reach of the parachutist. The extra control lines control the openings at the rear of some of the cells, these openings providing a through a flow of air and greater control.
