Abstract
Novel process for growing of the small crustaceans Artemia Salina in a natural or synthetic liq. medium by introducing the eggs or larvae of Artemia Salina into an aq. liq. medium contng. mineral salts, foodstuff particles and marine algae. The concn. of algae is pref. 0.5-15 g./litre e.g. of seaweed, esp. decayed. The foodstuff particles may be phytoplankton grown in a medium identical with that in which the Artemia Salina is grown. The aq. medium is pref. aerated and maintained at 15-35 degrees C. esp. 25-30 degrees C. The minerals present pref. contain the ions Na+ (8-35 g./litre); Mg++ (0.4-4); K+ (0.2-3); Ca++ (0.0002-10); Cl- (12-72); HCO3- (1-8) and SO4-- (0.5-5) with a pH between 7.5-11. The small crustaceans are a very high quality food having about 63% protein content (dry wt.). The process overcomes the normal difficulties of slow growth (20-30 days in nature), low yield (approx. 100 g./m.3) which can be increased to 10 kg./m.3 and high mortality rate (1/3 rd.) reduced to 1-3%.
