Abstract

In the installation of the sec. insulating barrier of a storage vessel integrated with the support structure of a ship and consisting of two successive sealing barriers, a prim. barrier in contact with liquefied gas being transported and a sec. barrier arranged between the prim. barrier and the hull or bulkhead of the ship, the two sealing barriers alternating with two thermally insulating barriers, the sec. insulating barrier cnsisting of boxes, pref. filled with insulating matl. fixed directly to the double resistant hull or double wall of the ship, while the prim. barrier is hooked, by means of support elements traversing the sec. sealed barrier in sealing manner, to reference devicex fixed to the supporting hull, the improvement whereby (a) at least one ribbon, opt. continuous, of slow-drying mastic is deposited on the hull or double wall of the ship; (b) the boxes of the sec. insulating barrier are applied to the support hull, and arranged side by side; (c) an applicator located with respect to reference elements fixed to the support hull, is applied to the boxes to produce the desired inwardly facing profile of a part of the surface to be produced by the boxes, the applicator pressure being maintained until the mastic has dried; (d) the applicator is removed and the sec. sealing barrier is then formed on the sec. insulating barrier so produced and thereafter is followed in known manner by prim. insulating and sealing barriers. By fixing the insulating boxes with ribbons of adhesive it is no longer necessary to distribute a mastic coating over the whole surface of the hull or to distribute the mastic over each of the boxes before fixing these in posn. The costs of forming the sec. insulating barrier are consequently much reduced.
