Abstract

Composite material contains SiC particles, (I), which contact one another, bonded by sintered glass ceramic particles (II). Pref. particle size of (I) and (II) is 5-150 mu and vol. ratio (I):(II) is 80:20 to 40:60. Pref. (II) have heat expansion coeffts. (2-40) x 10-7/degrees C and a glass compsn. of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2-, MgO-Al2O3-SiO2- or Li2O-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 series. The materials are used in electric heaters and resistances, catalyst supports, heat-exchangers, and parts of heat-resisting components. The materials have (i) improved workability, requiring less cutting power; (ii) homogeneous electrical props. with no local deviation of contact press. between SiC particles; (iii) an inherent resistivity of composite material which can be varied within wide limits by controlling prodn. conditions; (iv) high resistance to repeated heat cycles; (v) high chemical stability and (vi) gives composite materials having low resistivity even on sintering in an oxidising atmos., e.g. air.
