Abstract

An appts. for ion exchange by dialysis is made from discs which have spiral grooves on their faces and which are built up to enclose between them membranes in which a liq. to be treated, e.g. blood, circulates. The dialysate circulates in the grooves and the two streams flow in opposite directions to one another. The assembly is contained in a casing. There are holes for feeding and discharging dialysate and liq. to be treated, in the casing, in the discs at the beginnings and ends of the spirals and in the membranes. The depth of the grooves is such as to allow the liq. to circulate easily. The width between them is such as to form a continuous support for the flexible membrane which is held between them. The grooves can admit an electrical conductor or can allow the circulation of a suitable gas. The membranes and discs can be stacked in multiple units. The dimensions, assembly and materials of construction are variable according to the required use. The membrane may be replaced by a continuous tube in which the liq. to be treated flows. Used in medico-surgical applications and in indl. applicns. such as sugar sepn., purificn. of dextrin and tannin, prepn. of alkaloids etc. Partic. as an artificial kidney for treatment of patients with renal affections. The appts. is more efficient than existing appts. because of the greater fluid path length and because of the continuous flow which eliminates risks of eddying and high pressure drop.
