Abstract

An arrangement of frames, one fixed and one moving vertically, mounted on the top flange of a PWR/BWR, facilitate fuel changing. The cover of the reactor is removed and long guide studs are fixed into the empty stud holes. The fixed frame, comprising two horizontal portions with distance bars is lowered over these long studs and is held by a locking device. At this point the control rods will all be fully inserted into the core. The mobile platform is lowered to its bottom position by a chain or other device. The control rods from which the driving mechanisms have been removed, will now enter the holes and be locked by devices which comprise spring loaded balls to grip grooves in the rods. Provided the cooling water is sufficiently dosed with Boron salts, the platform can be raised to its upper position raising all the control rods and giving free access to the fuel elements. To remove the fixed frame, the clamping devices need only to be released by the projections on the bottom of the platform.
