Abstract

Crude glyceride-type polyunsatd. oils are hydrogenated using as catalyst aryl-tricarbonyl-chromium complex, at 180-250 degrees C. Hydrogenation is pref. at temp. 190-225 degrees C., pref. a press. 2-200 bars. Pref. aryl gp. is partially substd. by Cl or F and is esp. chlorobenzyl. Pref. mixt. after hydrogenation is subjected to mineral or organic acid hydrolysis to decompose complex. Vegetable oils are treated, e.g., soya, rape, linseed oil etc. Unlike prior catalysts operating at below 175 degrees C. no costly prior refining to eliminate sterols, carotenes, phospholipids etc. is necessary.
