Abstract
Polyamide compsns. contg. (A) a polyamide derived from at least one dicarboxylic acid and at least one diamine and (B) up to 10 mol % of at least one substd. amide of formula (in which R is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, X and Z are opt. substd. aryl adn Y is arylene) are used for the mfr. of fibres by melt-spinning. Gel formation during prolonged heating in the melt phase which reduces processability and quality is retarded. (A) is derived from a single acid and diamine pref. hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid. (B) is added before or during polymerise. of mixed with the granules before melt-spinning. 52 pts. nylon-66 salt and 1.26 parts cpd. of formula XNHCOYCONHZ (in which X and Z are phenyl and Y is p-phenylene) are heated in vacuum for 180 mins. at 200 degrees C. Th elow mol. wt. polymer is heated for 5 min. at 290 degrees C in a thin film under steam, cooled and granulated. Time to gel at 290 degrees C under steam is 1826 mins. Without the amide additive time to gel is 1356 mins.
