Abstract

Tubular bodies are made from laminated composite thermoplastic sheet which bonded in a longitudinal lap joint between ultrasonic welding jaws having an asymmetric serrated profile. The laminate structure contains >=1 internal layer of thermoplastic material similar to or compatible with the surface layers. Method is useful for mfr. of containers where the contents must not contact the core layers of the composite sheet, otherwise exposed at the edges of cut sheet. The serrated jaws distort and compress the sheet near the cut edge thus squeezing some of the thermoplastic core material out to glaze the edge of the cut sheet and enclose the edges of the non thermoplastic layers.
