Abstract
Fluoride battery comprises a two compartment cell with a porous partition between the compartments, the cathode compartment contg. CIF5 and an electrolyte dissolved in anhydrous HF into which a metal electrode is plunged, the anode compartment contg. a soln of electrolyte in duhydrous HF into which a lithium based electrode is plunged. Suitable anodes are pure or alloyed Li or an organic matl. impregnated with Li metal. The preferred electrolyte is LiF and the cathode is Pt. The partition is pref: a sintered PTFE. (Teflon RTM). The cell presents an energy density markedly higher than practically any other known cell.
