Abstract

Polyesters contg. 3-methyl-1,5-pentadiol (I) as the glycol component were useful as plasticisers with good flexibility at low temp. In an example, 365 pts. adipic acid and 283 pts. (I) were heated during 7 hrs. to 210 degrees, refluxed to acid value 2 with 2-ethylhexanol 111, toluene 38, and dibutyl Sn oxide 0.76 pt., kept at 200 degrees/1-2 mm. to remove toluene and excess alcohols to give a polyester plasticiser (Z4 Gardner-Holdt viscosity at 25 degrees, acid value 0.1, and OH value 4.5). On the other hand, 50 pts. of the above prepd. plasticiser was roll-kneaded for 10 mins. at 165 degrees with polyvinylchloride 100, Ca stearate 1, and Ba stearate 1 pt., and press-moulded for 5 mins. at 165 degrees to give a sheet (1 mm. thickness) with 126 kg./cm2 of 100% modulus and -9 degrees low-temp. flexibility (ASTM D1043-51).
