Abstract

Device for permitting the rotor of an underground drilling motor to be locked relatively to the stator, has (i) the shaft of the underground motor provided with a sliding sleeve fixed to the drill bit and normally retained by suitable devices in a first axial posn. with respect to the motor shaft, which permits the axial force and normal rotational couple of the motor to be transmitted to the drill bit, and (i) (ii) devices for retaining the sleeve in this first posn, such that if the drill bit jams, the sleeve can take up a second axial posn. with respect to the shaft so that it and the drill bit is directly fixed to the motor body. Thus when the drill bit has jammed on the bottom of the borehole, it becomes possible to apply a very high torque above that which can be supplied from the motor, via the drilling pipe string and the motor body, so as to release the drill bit.
