Abstract

Lignocellulosic material, esp. mechanical wood pulp, is grafted with an unsatd. monomer by (a) activating the lignocellulosic material with (I) an unsatd. org. acid halide, or (II) an unsatd. isocyanate, and (b) grafting with (III) an unsatd. monomer. Good graft yields. Low cost reproducible process avoiding use of ionising radiation. Step (a) is pref. effected in the presence of an aryl amine e.g. pyridine. Steps (a) and (b) may be effected in a combined reaction. Step (b) is effected in aqs. suspension, pref. in the presence of an org. peroxide. (I) is pref. (metha)acryloyl chloride, II is pref. alkyl isocyanate, and III is pref. styrene.
