Abstract

Extrusion die in which an axial flow diverges over a conical spreader before passing through an annular array of holes in a baffle plate. The strands emerging from the baffle plate enter a gap between a cylindrical barrel and a mandrel having a series of helical grooves, developed for less than one turn along the upstream part of the mandrel. The downstream part of the mandrel has a smooth surface. The die is for extrusion of thin wall thermoplastic tubing or film. Its use generates a circumferentially homogenised extrudate with thinner walls and/or better strength than similar film produced over a plain mandrel. The wall section comprises a laminate of layers derived from at least two of the initial stranded flows through the holes.
