Water-insol. but water-swellable copolymer of 40-75%, pref. 50-65% (I) heterocyclic polymerisable N-vinyl cpd. contg. carbonyl function adjacent to N and selected from N-vinyl lactams, N-vinyl imidazolidone, N-vinyl succinimide, N-vnyl diglycolylimide N-vinyl glutarimide, N-vinyl-3-morpholinone, N-vinyl-5-Me-3-morpholinone and mixts. thereof, and 25-60%, pref. 35-50 wt.% (II) glycidyl ester selected from glycidyl methacrylate, glycidyl acrylate and glycidyl crotonate and mixts. thereof. A shape-retaining hydrogel consisting of above copolymer and 10-90%, pref. 30-70% wt. water is also claimed. This hydrogel can be made in the shape of a contact lens and has excellent phys. and optical properties.
