Abstract

Curved, reinforced sections or members, esp. bumpers or fenders for automobiles, are made continuously by pultrusion; glass filaments or glass staple fibres and one or more srips of woven or non-woven material are conducted through an impregnating bath containing polyester, vinylester or epoxy resin and heat-activated catalyst; the reinforcing material is thereby impregnated and then passed through a rovings guide comprising openings which determine the spatial arrangement and concentration of the filaments or rovings and then through a H.F. dielectric heating unit where the material is shaped to the correct cross-section and thoroughly heated right through to its core to cause activation of the catalyst and hardening of the resin; the thus shaped material is then passed through a stationary mould of constant radius of curvature so that the resultant member becomes curved., the member being then siezed by pairs of jaws, which execute an angular rotation to a cutter, where the curved extruded material of constant cross-section is cut to the desired lengths.
