Abstract

The electromechanical voltage regulator, for self-rectifying a.c. generators in motor vehicles, is connected between the generator output and the excitation winding input. These two circuit points are bridged by a single pair of tungsten contacts. The contacts are connected to a shunt circuit which leads away part of the extra current so that sparking between the contacts remains practically constant during fluctuations in the generator load. The shunt circuit consists of an electromagnetic oil controlling the contacts, and, coupled to one contact, a resistor that earths the coil, a thermistor coupled to the other contact, and a diode connecting the thermistor with earth.
