Abstract

The phase modulation technique is one in which two carrier waves in quadrature are amplitude modulated, each by means of a balanced modulator with an analogue modulation signal, the modulation products being added vectorially. The technique employed suppresses spectral components of an order higher than some predetermined level and hence reduces the bandwidth corresponding to the modulation index and to the modulation frequency. The signals are derived from the cosine and sine functions of the analogous modulation signal by a sampling technique. Cut-off frequencies for the filters are equal to the mean of the sampling frequency, the low pass filters having a nyquist response.
