Abstract

A parallel beam of coherent light from a source passes through a polariser and a deviator which is connected electrically (20, 30) to a power supply. The deviator comprises a series of transparent electrodes (3) mounted on a liquid crystalline bed (4) deposited on an electrode (2). The electrodes are connected to a selector circuit (6) which permits different voltages to be connected causing an electric field which deflects precisely the beam of light. The series of electrodes (3) are regularly spaced in the form of a diffraction grating and receive an outer transparent support (8).
