Abstract

A sublimable metal chloride is packed into a storage container, heated to sublime the chloride and the vapour produced is carried to a reduction device in which a reducing metal is molten, via a connecting duct, the flow of chloride vapour being monitored by means of a gas flow-meter positioned in the duct. The chloride is reduced to the metal which collects in the reducing chamber. The method is esp. suitable for reducing ZrCl4, HfCl4 and NbCl5. the molten metal is provided separately in proportion to the passage of chloride vapour as measured by the gas flow-meter. The process is controlled so that the reaction proceeds according the passage of slow vaporising chloride.
