Abstract

The specification described the formulation of moulding cpds for the fabrication of complex-shaped items by casting methods. The casting cpds are based on a polyurethane elastomer, an epoxy resin and a liq. elastomeric modifier. The mfr of items from thermoplastics such as polypropylene and ABS and from thermosets such as phenolic and polyester resins requires high-level capital investment in machinery moulds and attendant delays. Furthermore, materials used in techniques such as sheet thermoforming, lamination and casting (e.g. epoxy cpds) have the draw-back of either inadequate geometric processability or of insufficient mechanical or thermal performance. The cpds have the advantage of easy (casting) processability and mechanical and thermal properties which may be adjusted by compsn. to resemble those of materials such as ABS. By suitable mould-design and pigmentation, the cpds may be made to resemble, e.g. ABS in appearance.
