Abstract

Appts. is intended for the prodn. of alkaline or acidified water by the passage of an electric current. It comprises an electrically non-conducting tank, made from a transparent or non-transparent synthetic resin, with an inlet and a outlet. Two electrically conducting areas are made from a semi-conductor or of compressed powdered carbon; they have a semi-circular shape, corresponding to the internal surfaces of the cylindrical tank, and are sepd. from each other by insulators. Their internal faces are completely covered by a permeable layer. For obtaining an alkaline water, the tank is filled from a pipe and a negative current applied to the electrodes and the conducting areas; water filters through the permeable layer and is electrolysed. The dissolved salts are ionised and transformed progressively into alkalies. The current is switched off and the water evacuated through a pipe. By reversing the current an acidified water can be produced. By using a commutating switch it is easy to obtain water for medical and/or demestic uses or acidified water with good cosmetics props. for the skin. It an also be adapted for the treatment of industrial wastes to neutralise extremely acid or alkaline effluents.
