Abstract

Mouldable, flexible linings for container seals contain a mixt. of (a) polypropylene (I) or propylene polyallomer (II), which is pref. a crystalline block copolymer of predominantly C3H6 with C2H4, (b) >=1 elastomer, consisting of C2H4-C3H6 copolymer, polyisobutylene, isobutylene-isoprene copolymer or C2H4-vinyl acetate copolymer and (c) >=1 filler, consisting of SiO2, Al silicate, CaCO3 or TiO2. Either 30-66 (30-35) esp. 32-34 wt. % (I) is mixed with 70-34 wt. % elastomer, or 40-50 (44-46) wt. % (II) is mixed with 60-50 wt. % elastomer (%-ages of (I), (II) and (b) refer to their total wt.). Filler content is 50-200 wt. % w.r.t. total wt. of remaining constituents. Esp. for lining rotating or screw-tops for bottles and jars. Linings are inert to foods for long periods, retain sealing properties towards gases in container, prevent contact of seal with acid gases, resist heating in autoclaves for 70 min. at 127 degrees C, have bending modulus (according to ASTM D 747-63) 10,000-20,000, good retortability, low permeability ior O2, water and AcOH; high crack resistance on loading, good elasticity, rigidity but slightly at refrigerator temps., and can be injection- or heat-moulded.
