Abstract

This centrifuge rotates on a vertical axis and is loaded from the top into a drum. At the centre of the drum is a cowling, rotating with the drum and covering a motor, the drive-shaft of which is fixed to the cowling and thus driving the drum. Between the skirt of the cowling and the drum is an annular cavity or gap by which the clean turnings fall out of the drum, and the upper part of the drum is fitted with a conical top leaving a charging hole at the centre; the drum is approx. twice the height of the cowling. The motor is mounted on a flexible housing fitted with an out-of-balance switch which switches on compressed air, i.e. to blow swarf off the drum thus eliminating the out-of balance condition if and when this occurs. No moving parts are required for either charging or discharging the drum, the swarf being fed into the top and falling out of the bottom.
